Sergeant Raj Kishore Sahu, VM

Sgt Raj Kishore Sahu was born on 29 November 1971 at Cuttack, Orissa. He was enrolled in the Indian Air Force on 03 August 1989 and became a Flight Engineer on 24 May 1997. A very sincere and dedicated flier, he had a total 360 hours of flying on MI-17 to his credit.

He was ever willing to undertake flying mission and was meticulous in his approach. He served in many Air Force stations across the length and breadth of India and has been posted in both Mi-8 and Mi-17 Squadrons besides working on the technical maintenance team for MiG-27 aircraft at a forward fighter base in the eastern region.

As a Flight Engineer on board a Mi-17 helicopter, he was killed in action on 28 May 99 while participating in a combat attack mission against infiltrator held ground positions on the Indian side of the line of control in Kargil.

He displayed the highest standard of professionalism in steadfastly carrying out his duties as ordered, in the face of intense enemy opposition during the attack mission. His cool and efficient functioning made possible the effective employment of the helicopter during the earlier attack. In doing so he made the supreme sacrifice for his country.

He was unmarried, the only son of his parents.
