Sergeant P.V.N.R. Prasad, VM


Sgt Pilla Venkata Narayan Ravi Prasad was born on 15 August 1965 at Elvru, Andhra Pradesh. He was enrolled in the IAF on 18 January 1985 and became a Flight Gunner on 06 June 1994. A very keen and energetic flier, he had amassed 1200 hours of accident/incident free flying to his credit. He was a very confident and dedicated aircrew. He was awarded with the commendation by AOC-in-C in 1995 for his devotion to duty. He served in many Air Force stations and specialised in Mi-8 helicopters.

As a Flight Gunner on board a Mi-17 helicopter, he was killed in action on 28 May 99 while participating in a combat attack mission against infiltrator held ground positions on the Indian side of the line of control in Kargil.

Sgt P.V.N.R. Prasad displayed exemplary courage and bravery of the highest order. While in the face of intense enemy opposition, he carried out his functions in an exemplary fashion, significantly contributing to the effectiveness of the crew as a whole. In doing so, he made the supreme sacrifice for his country.

He was married and is survived by his wife Mrs. P. Anuradha and three and half years old daughter, P. Hyndavi.
