Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, VC

In Italy, on 10th July 1944, a company of 5th Mahratta Light Infantry attacked a position strongly defended by the enemy.

During this attack a rifle section commanded by Naik Yeshwant Ghadge came under heavy machine gun fire, resulting in the death/wounding of all members of the section except the commander. Knowing full well that none were left to accompany him, Naik Yeshwant Ghadge rushed to the machine gun post, knocked out the gun with a grenade, and then shot one of the crew. Having no time to change his magazine, he held his gun by the barrel and bashed to death the remaining two gun crew members. Unfortunately, he was shot in the back by snipers and died at the post which he had captured single-handed.

The courage, determination, and devotion to duty of this NCO, in a situation where he knew the odds held little hope of survival, were outstanding.
