Flt Sgt Arullappa Thomas, Vr.C , Indian Airforce

MWO(Retd) and Flt. Lt.(Hony) Arullappa Thomas, Vr.C

Nicknamed "Guy" Thomas(a nickname a British Officer gave him when he won a wager to kill a bird by stone), Flt. Lt. Arullappa Thomas earned his Vir Chakra during the 1947 Kashmir war.

The IAF Dakota's were used extensively to bomb enemy positions. The bombing from Dakota's required all hands on deck to manually roll and push the bombs out of the side door. Thomas helped out with this task.

For successfully bombing enemy positions, all the crew were awarded Vir Chakra's. Flt. Lt. Thomas is the only Flight Signaller in the IAF to win a Vir Chakra.

During the 1970's, MWO Thomas served as an Air Signal Instructor at NSS (Navigation & Signals School) at AF Stn. Begumpet, Hyderabad. He retired in 1978 as a Honorary Flight Lieutenant.
