Flt Lt Satish Chandra Sharma, Vr.C

During the India-Pakistan war in December 1971, Fg Off Satish Chandra Sharma was attached to a brigade in the Eastern Sector for duty. On 7th December, he accompanied a company airlifted by helicopters to a site behind the enemy occupied area.

Under heavy enemy fire, he directed the incoming helicopter sorties to strike at enemy positions so effectively that the enemy could not fire till the next morning. He again went out to a vantage point under heavy enemy small arms fire and shelling and successfully directed our bombers on enemy positions and targets so accurately that the enemy firing ceased.

On the night of December 8th, he encountered a small enemy patrol who fired at his party. Though unfamiliar with the infantry tactics, he personally led the charge on the enemy patrol. This spontaneous and swift action resulted in the death of two enemy personnel. Then he continued to direct air attacks on the enemy which disorganised the enemy's preparation for attack.

Throughout, Fg Off Sharma displayed gallantry, leadership and professional skill of a high order.
