Group Captain Vidya Bhushan Vasisht, MVC, VM

During the Indo-Pak war in December 1971, Wg Cdr V.B. Vasisht, as commanding officer of an operational An-12 squadron, led a group of heavy bombers of his squadron in two attacks on an important enemy fuel and ammunition dump at Changa Manga forest on 3rd and 4th December. In spite of very heavy enemy ground fire, Wg Cdr Vasisht pressed home the attack and caused severe damage to the target.

On the night of 5th December, he led a formation of his bombers to attack enemy positions in the Haji Pir Pass in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Inspite of the inherent hazards of low-level flying in mountains and heavy anti-aircraft fire, he pressed home the attack and achieved marked success in hitting enemy positions. He also carried out attacks on Kahuta, Husainiwala bridge and water works, Sui gas plant, Skardu runway and army concentrations in the Rajasthan sector.

Throughout the operations, Wg Cdr Vasisht displayed leadership, exceptional devotion to duty, and conspicuous bravery in repeatedly leading attacks against heavily defended enemy targets.
