Flight Lieutenant Subramaniam Muhilan, Indian Airforce

Flight Lieutenant Subramaniam Muhilan, VM

Flt Lt S Muhilan was born on 8th March 1972 at Belgaum, Karnataka. After completing his B.Sc(Bachelor of Science) in July 1992 from Bangalore, he joined IAF as a cadet through CDS(Combined Defence Services exam). He was commissioned on 18 December 1993 and had been posted to Squadron No.152 Helicopter Unit since 02 March 1998.

Flt Lt Muhilan, 27, was a very keen flier and highly dedicated officer. He had over 1250 hrs of flying to his credit and was considered to be one of the best shot in rocketry. He was a thorough gentleman and had positive approach in life. He was well motivated and striving hard for personal growth. He had flown both the Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters. Intimately familiar with high altitude operations, his experience was an asset to the IAF in the Kargil operations.

On 28 May 99, Flt Lt Muhilan was captaining a Mi-17 helicopter during an attack mission against ground positions strongly held by Pakistani infiltrators in the Drass sector. He skillfully maneuvered his Mi-17 helicopter and repeatedly carried out attacks in the face of fierce enemy opposition in the form of ground fire and missiles. Unfortunately his helicopter was downed by a U.S made Stinger SAM(surface to air missile).

Flt Lt Muhilan's courageous action unmindful of the danger to his personal safety typified the courage of the IAF's helicopter pilots who have time and again demonstrated such qualities during various operations including those conducted during natural calamities in aid to civil power.

The last time Muhilan came home on leave was in 1998 along with his wife Bina and two-year-old son Dhruv. "In those 25 joyous days, little did I know I wouldn't see him again," sobbed his mother Chinthamani. Because there was only one phone in Kottur village(Tamil Nadu), Muhilan used to write to his mother from the front. When he wrote to her last in March, he promised her some money and to visit her soon. His mother and brother went to Srinagar where the body was cremated.
