Brig(Retd) Karam Singh, AVSM, Vr.C

On 8th April 1948, Major Karam Singh, commanding a squadron of Central India Horse, was ordered to give support to 4 Dogras who were to attack the strongly held enemy position on Barwali Ridge in J&K.

For five hours he kept on giving support to the attacking infantry with his guns, under continuous machine gun and mortar fire, keeping his head out of the tank in complete disregard of his personal safety. On 9th April, Major Karam Singh was leading the armoured column which was advancing towards Chingas.

"But for his courage and devotion to duty, the advance to Chingas might have been delayed and subsequently the capture of Rajaori would have taken days", writes his commanding officer.
