During the India-Pakistan war in December 1971, Brig. Anand Sarup was allotted the task of organising and launching into battle a force for engaging the enemy at Pathanagar and in the area north of Fenny Town. He organised this force quickly and the troops under his command fought gallantly during the battles at Nazirhat, Kumirhat and Bhatiari. Brig. Anand Sarup was constantly on the move, well forward with his troops, directing the operations.

Throughout, Brig. Anand Sarup displayed conspicuous gallantry and outstanding leadership.
