This religious procession transports a statue of Saint Dnyaneshwar on a platform called a pahlki. This Saint was born in 1275 AD in Alandi. He translated the religious texts into the local language so that people could have access to the sacred writings. At the age of 16 he took a vow of silence. At the age of 21 he decreed that his life's work was over and he had his followers bury him alive.
